Burnelli vs Boeing - One Goes Thermal Bumping
Film shows the 4th trim session of the 37" free-flight rubber-powered Burnelli Transport concept aircraft from 1947, along with a flight by the 44" Boeing 306-C. The focus was on both models flying for the first time with recent updates. The Burnelli was having its right circling flight path flipped to going left at launch...which hopefully will be more controlled during the middle of the flight, and thru the transition to the glide. The Boeing is looking to be more spirally stable, and keep the wings level after the power run. Flown in Wawayanda, NY, filmed by Tom Hallman on 6.28.24 with a Canon PowerShot SX20, and iPhones 11 & 14Pro. Music via the talented musicians at ArtList.io, who breathe life into my films.

Model Airplanes Flip a Lazy Day at Sunset
Переглядів 3,7 тис.День тому
Two days at Wawayanda were supposed to be calm and relaxing, but instead the wind was up for the duration of the first 12 hours, leading to zero flying. At least we accomplished a few field repairs. The sunset, and sunrise on the following morning, produced some beautiful flights, which are documented here. Filmed on June 11th & 12th 2024, by Tom Hallman using a Canon PowerShot SX20 & iPhones 1...

I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of trimming the 1947 rubber-powered free-flight 32” Comet Stratus, built during early COVID by 87 year old Ed McQuaid. He asked me to fly her next time at Wawa, since he could not longer chase. I promised him a film, so here’s the result. After a few test glides to find the CG, I started at 100 & 200 hand winds, then 300. She looked ok, and only needed a s...

I've been working on this 37" Burnelli twin since early February '24, and I'm pleased with the progress. There were numerous concept sketches for this design from the mid to late '40s, so I chose one with the cockpit over the left side nacelle, which gives me a wider fuselage for more prop diameter, and a clear airflow to the wide lifting body. Seems ideal for free-flight rubber. I hope to have...

Two of my favourites. Was the Boeing ever built? I know Northrop built many flying wings, including the original blended body Avion-1 which was much more similar to the Burnelli with it's twin tail booms and offset cockpit. I kinda wish you'd have honoured Jack Northrop for his pioneering work in this configuration especially after the tragic loss of the N-9MB in 2019. As a cleaner design, lacking the detached elevons and wing tip rudders, if you were able to make it work, I'm sure it would outperform the Boeing.

With it's planar configuration and double rudder, this Burnelli Twin really shows how thermals do so much more than just aiding lift! The DT works beautifully, it's great to see the plane coming back in that realistic and gradated way. The Boeing Delta is one of my favourite planes I've seen Tom; there's such an air of solidity about that big fuselage, really magical. Most enjoyable as ever, thank you Sir! 🌟👍

Great flying airplane! But I have always wondered why more FAC fliers don’t use a tracking system. There are transmitters small enough to be used on birds and bats. Most planes need some ballast anyway, and the model could be built to have an enclosed tracker where the weight would do some good. I did a demo at Geneseo, taped a transmitter to George Bredehoft’s embryo. Wind shifted and it went pretty far into the corn. I had a guy on the antenna who had never used a tracker, while I worked the controls on the receiver. We got the plane and we were out of the corn in about ten minutes. The embryo could not be seen until we got within a couple of feet. The time and effort to build such a gem and trim it out adds up to a lot. Seems silly to just throw all that away if it flies OOS.

I'm surprised that's all the longer it flies. Must be quite heavy. I'm thinking some of the micro-RC equipment (magnetic actuators, 50mah lipo batt etc) would probably be the ticket for a project like this. Wouldn't need much control power at all on that rudder.

If I got back into this hobby again, I would never use CA glue. I became a health person 33 years ago. The nose knows. Easy as that. If you want to look it up, that's also easy: HAZARD SUMMARY * Methyl 2-Cyanoacrylate can affect you when breathed in and may be absorbed through the skin. * Contact can irritate and burn the skin and eyes. * Breathing Methyl 2-Cyanoacrylate can irritate the nose and throat causing coughing and wheezing. * Methyl 2-Cyanoacrylate may cause a skin allergy. If allergy develops, very low future exposure can cause itching and a skin rash. * Methyl 2-Cyanoacrylate may cause an asthma-like allergy. Future exposure can cause asthma attacks with shortness of breath, wheezing, cough, and/or chest tightness.

@@maxfliart Didn't they though! Forgive me Tom, for asking an indirectly related question, but is there a way to apply reverse rudder during a flight. I've thought of one and was wondering whether it'd ever been tried? Edited to add: I rigged a bungie cord/aspirin tablet link to automatically close my Nordic Halman sailboat's sliding hatch if it started to rain. The rain dissolved the tablet allowing the bungie to pull close the hatch. The same principle might work for ff and could be very simple and light. A wet string could provide the moisture.
